Additional Property Attributes

The main building on the property is the last existing sawtooth roof structure in the state of Vermont - a portion of the building will be renovated under an agreement with the State Department of Historic Preservation. (PPF attached to QR 9 (Final), 7/1/06-9/30/06) Draft CAP done in January 2008. On February 12, 2009, assessment work began on the 85,000 gallon underground concrete vault storage tank. Upon opening the tank, it was discovered that there was approximately 11,000 gallons of fuel oil #6 and some water. The Fuel oil was tested for sulfur content and found to be acceptable levels so that usable fuel could be recycled. Once all of the contents was pumped out and the tank walls were cleaned, borings were taken to assess impacts to soils directly beneath the tank. It was found that the soils beneath were indeed saturated with fuel oil. Pursuant to the DEC's procedures, the concrete top of the tank was collapsed into the tank and filled with fill already existing on site. The proper waste manifests and paperwork has been submitted to the appropriate state agencies.

Former Use: The main facility building is a single story structure approximately 270,000 square feet in area that is the former location of industrial activities involving metal grinding, planning, heat treatment and painting. Important developments attributed to J&L was the manufacture of turret lathes designed by Henry Stone in 1874, the Hartness Comparator in 1921, and an automatic thread grinding machine in the mid 1920s. Jones and Lamson machine tool was the largest tool manufacturer in Vermont prior to the 1950s. First developed in 1907, site operations at plant #1 included reshaping, and treatment and finishing processes of metal work. Circa 1913, a second and separate machine shop was built west of the first shop. The two shops became known as the East and West shops. The largest expansion of the facility occurred from 1939 to 1941, with the construction of the administration building, assembly building, southwest machine shop, five bay brick garage, metal scrap bin, and a 115-foot steel smokestack 54-inch dia. at the boiler house. A second, one story, flat roofed factory building was constructed in 1954-55 south of Plant #1. In 1964, Textron, Inc. of Rhode Island purchased the asset and business of J&L from its local owners. In 1979, the casting building was replaced with the current much larger sheet metal on steel structure. In 1983, Textron sold the J&L Division to Donald C. Hoodes, an independent businessman. Following a short ownership and subsequent sale, the J&L facility closed in 1985, following the relocation of equipment to other locations.
