Additional Property Attributes

This property, current home of Fishels Furniture, was the gas holder tank site for East Portland Gas Works. The gas plant operated from the late 1800s through the early 1920s. In 2012, the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) alerted the owners that the site may have lingering contamination from this historic use. The property owners contacted the Brownfield Program for assitance. Although the Phase II investigation revealed low levels of arsenic and cyanide in the soil, the levels are below the DEQ's lowest risk based concentrations and are not thought to be associated with the past use. The Brownfield Program was able to assist the property owners with receiving a No Further Action Letter from DEQ by funding 80 percent of the DEQ oversight and Voluntary Cleanup Program fees. On October 21st, 2013, DEQ issued a NFA for this site.

Former Use: This property was part of the former East Portland Gas Works which operated from the late 1800s through the early 1920s. Historical records show that the site once contained a 300,000 cubic foot capacity gas storage holding tank. Cyanide is a common contaminant associated with this type of use. According to aerial photographs the gas holder tank was removed between 1936 and 1984. The Fishels Furniture store has operated out of this building since 1945.
