Additional Property Attributes

St. Joseph's Dormitory is located on the Marty Indian School Campus and was used as student quarters until 1999. The three story brick structure with a basement is vacant. As a result of "uncertain structural integrity" of the building a limited Phase II was only conducted for the property. The presence of asbestos containing material was identified in previous investigations. A walk through for visual inspection noted the presence of light fixtures that could potentially contain PCBs and mercury,emercency/exit lightening that could contain lithium batteries, extensive mold/water damage and large quantities of quano. The building has become a pigeon roost, with over 6 inches of pigeon guano on the floors in places. Lead was found in soil around the outside of the building.

Former Use: Property is currently located on the Mary Indian School Campus. In 1911, the Saint Paul's Indian Mission was established. St. Josephs dormitory is estimated to have been built in the 1920s. In 1975 the owernship and operation of the school was transferred to the Yankton Sioux Tribe.
