Additional Property Attributes

The property is the historic office complex of the Colorado Fuel and Iron Company (CF&I) located on the south side of Pueblo in the low income area called Bessemer. The campus buildings were formerly used for administration of the Colorado Fuel and Iron industrial complex including the mining operations throughout southern Colorado,Wyoming, Utah and in New Mexico. As was typical with construction practices throughout the country during that time of construction, asbestos containing materials and lead based paint were used. This TBA assessed the oldest building in the complex. The building was built in 1901 and used until 1933 when it became vacant. Bessemer Historic Society plans to abate the asbestos and lead based paint and reuse the building as the Steelworks Museum. The reuse is associated with Community benefits, sustainable reuse/brownfields prevention, reduction of environmental threats, and community involvement.

Former Use: The Site is the historic office of the Colorado Fuel and Iron Company. The building was used for administrative office space from 1901 -1993 when the company went bankrupt. The property has been vacant since 1993. The property was bought by Oregon Steel of Portland, Oregon. In 2003, Bessemer Historical Society purchased the property from Oregon Steel. Bessemer Historical Society plans to abate asbestos and lead based paint in order to renovate and reuse the building as the Minnequa Steelworks Museum.
