Additional Property Attributes

The building is one-story with a partial basement and sealed attic. The building is constructed of painted clay brick with a wooden , and is located next to the Missouri River and on historical Front Street. 48 suspect building materials were sampled. Only one of the 48 suspect materials was confirmed to contain asbestos. Lead paint was detected on 46 of the painted building components. Lead-based paint (paint having a concentration >1.0 mg/cm2) was detected on 20 painted building components.

Former Use: The property is currently owned by the City of Fort Benton. John Wilton built the Fire Engine House on the river levee in 1883. The south side of the building eventually became used as the Fort Benton City Hall, and use as City Hall continued until 1966. In 1975, the Engine House was restored, and in 1980 it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Today the building displays the original fire equipment including the original hand pumper that came upriver by steamboat. It also serves as Fort Bentons Information Center and Chamber of Commerce.
