Additional Property Attributes

The Lafayette Street Schoolyard was formerly comprised of eight individual parcels occupied by residential dwellings, until these structures were razed sometime prior to 1930. Following the demolition of the residential structures, the subject property was used as a playground, and a parking lot. The subject property is currently a paved unimproved recreational space that serves over 1,100 children. The Trust for Public Land plans to redevelop the property as a green playground.

Former Use: The property has been used as a schoolyard for the adjacent Lafayette Street School at least since the 1930s; prior to that the site was occupied by residential properties.

November 2017: The Trust for Public Land, Newark Public Schools, city and state officials, and the Lafayette Street School community celebrated the opening of a new playground at the Lafayette Street School at a ribbon-cutting ceremony today. The event marks the successful culmination of a longstanding community effort to convert the one-time parking lot into a public playground and learning area for the students and the surrounding community. At the event the partners also announced a goal to expand their partnership to focus on creating new playgrounds at other schools across the city in the years ahead.
