Property Highlights

Bent County conducted renovation activities on Building 501 at the Ft. Lyon Facility. Based on previous investigations, asbestos-containing material (ACM) and lead-based paint (LBP) had previously been identified in the building. The TBA included an ACM survey to determine and/or refine the locations and extents of ACM at the building and visual inspections for PCBs, mercury, and mold. For the TBA project, all paint inside the building was considered LBP. During the Phase II, contaminants identified in the building were ACM and mold. For the cleanup, all LBP and Asbestos were abated. Former Use: Building 501 is vacant three story building located on C Street. Built in 1937, the buidling has been used for residential housing and has had several remodels. The Fort Lyon Facility property consists of 512 acres with approx. 55 residential buildings and a large community building. Fort Lyon dates back to 1868 when it was used as a U.S. Army Fort. The Fort Lyon Facility property has also been used by the U.S. Navy as a TB sanatorium, a VA Hospital, and a state correctional facility. The campus is currently owned by Colorado Department of Personnel and Administration and Bent County manages the property. The Fort Lyon Supportive Residential community utilizes numerous buildings on the property for housing for dual diagnosed people coming from homelessness. The community provides a path out of homelessness for individuals whose addictions have kept them from being successful in existing housing programs. Redeveloping some of the vacant buildings at Fort Lyon will help this program expand.
