Additional Property Attributes

Records reviewed indicate that the food center - building #25 was built in 1964 as an expanded food center for Griffin Hall. This building is a large food center which was an addition to the west side of Griffin Hall. The food center building consists of a dining hall, commercial kitchen, and storage areas. The building food center operations continued until 1986. Since 1986, the building has been vacant. Jefferson Local Development Corporation (JLDC) is interested in acquiring the property and redeveloping the Site for creating new employment opportunities. START conducted a Phase I ESA and Phase II ESA at the building. Results of the Phase II ESA confirmed the presence Asbestos Containing Material (ACM), lead glazed ceramic tiles, and polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) light ballasts in the building.

Former Use: The single story building functioned as food center with a kitchen, cafeteria, and storage areas from 1964-1986. The building has been vacant since 1986. The Montana State Training School Historic District was listed on the National Register of historic places in 2014. Griffith hall and the attached food center are listed as contributing buildings to the the historic district. Previous property owners of the school campus included the Montana Department of Transportation and the Montana Department of Corrections. Jefferson County currently owns the property, but Jefferson Local Development Corporation leases the property and is considering purchasing the property.
