Additional Property Attributes

The three story building, Griffin Hall Bldg. #9, was built in 1912 and was utilized for dining, dormitories, classrooms, and recreation until 1986 when the building was left vacant. The first floor was used for recreation, kitchen, and dining; the second floor for classrooms and offices; and the third floor for dormitories and an auditorium. Jefferson Local Development Corporation (JLDC) is interested in acquiring the property and redeveloping the Site for creating new employment opportunities. START conducted a Phase I ESA and Phase II ESA at the building. Results of the Phase II ESA confirmed the presence of Asbestos Containing Material (ACM), Lead-Based Paint (LBP), and polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) light ballasts in the building.

Former Use: Griffin Hall, building #9, was built in 1912 and the three story building had multiple school purposes including recreation, kitchen/dining, classrooms, offices, and dormitory. The building was built as part of hte of the Montana State School for Feeble Minded. In 1963, a fire burned the fourth story and renovations followed. The building has been vacant since 1986. In 2014, the Montana State Training School Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places with Griffin Hall an the attached food center listed as contributing building to the historic district. Previous owners of the school campus include the Montana Department of Transportation and the Montana Department of Corrections. The current owner is Jefferson County. Jefferson Local Development Corporation currently leases the property and is considering acquiring the property.
