Additional Property Attributes

The building was built in 1971 and is located in downtown Browning, MT. It has been operated as a Chevron service station and bulk plant since its construction. The property is currently vacant.

Former Use: Jim purchased the property in 1985. Prior to his ownership, the property was operated as a Chevron service station and bulk plant. In approximately 1990, DEQ required upgrades to the USTs with cathodic protection and fiberglass lining. Jim financed $100,000 through a local bank to pull the old tanks and replace them with new ones that met DEQs requirements, as well as upgrade the service station and fueling island. When the old USTs were removed, a release was discovered. According to Jim, DEQ later told Jim that the release appeared to be from overfilling the USTs numerous times prior to Jim?s ownership of the property, dating back to the 1940s. The site is eligible for Petrofund, so Jim initiated cleanup under Petrofund. While conducting the soil excavation around the new tanks that Jim had installed, Pruitt Construction hit one of the new tanks with its excavator, cracking the fiberglass lining and rendering the UST useless. Because Petrofund does not cover the removal or replacement of USTs, Jim was responsible for covering the cost of a new UST. He could not get any additional financing above the $100,000 he already owed, could not replace the tanks, and was forced to close his business.
