Additional Property Attributes

The Site is located in the Requa District of the Yurok Indian Reservation, Humboldt County, California, and is composed of portions of two parcels totaling approximately 86.5 acres. The parcels are lands held in trust for the Yurok Tribe (by the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA). The Site is predominantly covered with trees and vegetation and is currently unused. The Site contains a gravel access road (Lower Kep�el Road), a dirt road (Cappell Road), and remaining features from the former Devil�s Gulch Mill (i.e., conical burner and small structure). The conical burner contains a of waste wood ash and charcoal. The ash is eroding from under the edge of the conical burner. The waste ash was generated from historical mill activities. Two intermittent streams flow through the northwestern portion of the Site on both sides and combine into one unnamed stream near the conical burner. The confluence of the streams is less than 1,000 feet upstream of the Klamath River. In addition, two 55-gallon drums are present near the conical burner located on the northwestern portion of the Site. The drums were confirmed to be empty during the Site reconnaissance on October 12, 2016 and the June 2017 field activities. Debris was observed during the site reconnaissance, indicating refuse dumping is occurring.

Former Use: Based on a review of available historical information, the Site was developed as a lumber mill inapproximately 1948 and operated until the mill burned down in the 1960s. The mill has operated as the Weitchpec Lumber Company Mill, the Gibbens Mill and Devil�s Gulch Mill. The former mill processed Douglas Fir trees beginning in approximately 1948 and was converted to a stud mill prior to being destroyed by fire. There are no known records of fungicide or preservatives used during lumber processing operations. A truck maintenance shop was previously located on the Site. Fuel was stored and dispensed from the Site and waste oil was stored at the Site. Based on aerial photographs, the former log pond, conical burner, and former mill area appear as vegetated lands from 1954 to present. Aerial photographs prior to 1954 were not available. In the 1960s, the mill and associated buildings were destroyed in a fire.
