Additional Property Attributes

Former Use: The City-owned property is located at the southwest quadrant of Main and Mulberry Streets in downtown Rockford. The two-story, 20,592 square foot building was constructed in 1929 and has an ornate fa�e representative of the Classical Revival architectural . This building initially contained the City's first Walgreen's Drug store, which was there almost 40 years until 1969. Following Walgreens, a variety of other small shops and offices were present until the City purchased the building in 2013. This property is located within the West Downtown Rockford Historic District and is listed as a contributing structure to the District. Interior asbestos abetment occurred in in late 2018. The final phase of asbestos abatement, consisting of removal of the asbestos containing roof was completed in May 2022, with a new roof constructed immediately after to help weatherproof the historic building and improve its marketability for adaptive reuse. The building is now "shovel ready" and available to develop in the City's Main Street District.
