Additional Property Attributes

The Site is located at 512 Gibson Road in Woodland, Yolo County, California (Figure 1). The Site is composed of one parcel (Assessors Parcel Number [APN] 039-392-001) totaling approximately 2.27 acres in a residential neighborhood. The Site is situated on the south side of Gibson Road and bordered by residential homes to the east, west, and south. The County of Yolo owns the property and contracts with the non-profit organization Yolo Arts to operate it as a historical museum, cultural center, and public park known as the Gibson House. The Site is accessible from Gibson Road and is developed with nine buildings. The buildings include the main mansion, a dairy/root cellar building, an administrative office building, a laundry/garden barn, a blacksmith shop, an east barn, a west barn, a kitchen/rest room building, and a collections and conservation (C&C) building. The Site has an asphalt-paved driveway off Gibson Road and a parking area east of the mansion. The remaining areas are either open orchards or landscaped. The Applicant has plans to potentially remodel three of the Site buildings in the near future. The three buildings to be remodeled are the administrative office building, the laundry/garden barn, and the dairy/root cellar building. The Applicant requested that the TBA focus on only these three historical Site buildings.

Former Use: Historical records indicate the Site was the residence of homesteader and agricultural businessperson William Byas Gibson and his family for the estimated time period of 1856 to 1963. Following the death of Elnora Gibson in 1963, the Site sat vacant until 1975 when it was purchased by the County of Yolo. The Site was then opened as a museum in the early 1980s to house and display the Countys historical collection. The Site is currently used as a museum, a cultural center, and a public park. The Sites facilities are used for educational school tours, a volunteer gardening program, and private event rentals. Currently, the administrative office building is closed to the public and unused.
