Additional Property Attributes

The property appears to have generally consisted of undeveloped land until the west-adjoining Sutro Tunnel, a project designed to provide drainage to the Comstock Era mines in the Virginia City region, commenced in 1869. It was anticipated that the Town of Sutro would be developed near the mouth of the tunnel and include multiple mill sites, machine shops, churches, residences, and various other buildings. However, by the time the tunnel was completed in 1878, mining in the region had begun to decline and, therefore, not all of the planned Sutro town site and mining developments came to fruition.

The property is currently owned by the Sutro Tunnel Company of Virginia City, Nevada. Sutro Tunnel Company acquired the site in 1986 from Dayton Properties Ltd. by Grant, Bargain, Sale Deed, recorded as Document #010425 in the official records of Lyon County. No ownership information prior to 1986 is available from the Lyon County Assessor. Information from the Comstock Foundation and Friends of Sutro Tunnel historical organization indicates the following history of the tunnel and the site: Adolph Sutro began construction of the 3.8 mile tunnel (the tunnel and tunnel entrance is not on the site) in 1869 and completed construction of the tunnel in 1878. In 1887, Adolph Sutro's brother Theodore Sutro took over ownership of the property. Theodore Sutro sold the property to Franklin Leonard in 1898. The Leonard family maintained ownership of the property until the 1950s. Ownership of the property between the 1950s and 1986 is not documented.

The property appears to have consisted of multiple buildings, a pond, a well, dirt roads, and vacant land.

Currently, the property is inhabited by a caretaker. There are no other current uses of the property. Future planned uses of the property have not been finalized.
