Additional Property Attributes

The Shinnecock Nation Environmental Department seeks to determine the best future use of this former dump site. The subject property contains primarily municipal wastes that were historically dumped on the property. Much of the waste is buried, although some debris piles remain above ground surface. The former dump area is unlined and is approximately 15-20 ft deep. The area is currently used by the tribe for hunting and was used for hunting in the past. The site is currently closed to dumping and has been partially secured by a fence. However, trespassers continue to gain access to the site and dump items illegally gaining access via trails located along the southeast portion of the dump. Prior to being used as a dump, the site and surrounding areas were used as potato fields where pesticides such as Temik (aldicarb) were sprayed. Dumping at the site began in the 1940s or 1950s until it closed in the late 1970s or early 1980s.
