Additional Property Attributes

The City of Dakota City desires to develop the Dakota City Landfill site for residential use. The agency currently regulating the site is the Nebraska Solid Waste Department, and based on initial discussions with the Nebraska Solid Waste Department, any residential development of the site would likely require removal of buried wastes that underlie areas where inhabitable structures e.g., residential homes would be constructed. Intent to conform to preferred residential development and the current regulatory agency's position has guided formulation of cleanup alternatives that focus on partial or complete removal of buried wastes and piles of waste lime. Although environmental sampling has identified contaminants within landfill soils, no evidence indicates that the landfill is contributing to any significant environmental risks to surrounding properties. Contaminants identified within landfill soils do not appear to be widespread and may be associated with buried waste immediately adjacent to the sampled soil. Operations to remove buried wastes would likely result in removal of impacted soil.

Former Use: The former Dakota City Landfill property is owned by the City of Dakota City, NE, and was used as the citys municipal landfill from the 1960s until 1981. The site is currently a vacant lot.
