Additional Property Attributes

The Helping Hands Food Bank property is presently owned by the non-profit Helping Hands Food Bank of Hardin. There is one building on the property that is currenlty used by the food bank. The building and property was a former gas station that was in operation from 1958 until the late 1980s. Based on a review of regulatory records, a petroleum release associated with historical petroleum storage and dispensing activities was identified in the early 1990s. The gas station building was remodeled between 2006 and 2015 to accommodate expansion of food bank operations. Due to the increased community need for food support services Helping Hands Food Bank would like to expand their operations further and also convert the eastern portion of the property into a community garden. One Phase II ESA was completed with two funding sources in 2023 to determine if contaminants of potential concern associated with the former gas station, past use as a truck stop, and hazardous building materials would impede future expansion of the food bank or proposed community garden. Hazardous building material was not detected. The specific area proposed for gardening, did not identify contamination above EPA's target risk range and is acceptable for gardening, however, soil amendments and increased organic materials are reccomended for gardening. Petroleum contamination was found in an area of the former dispenser island (not in the area targeted for gardens). The contamination is likely attributed to the Pepsi Harden Facility and exisitng release on the property. Cleanup through the MT DEQ petroleum tank cleanup program will be needed.
