Additional Property Attributes

Former Use: The school was established by the Benedictine order as Immaculate Conception Indian Mission, a Catholic boarding school, in 1886. The location was given a post office in 1887 and named Stephan. The Crow Creek Sioux tribe took over operation of the school in the 1971-1992 school years and the Benedictine Order turned the mission buildings and land over to the Crow Creek Sioux tribe in 1976. A fire in 2004 resulted in damage to the dorm structure. A majority of the windows and a large section of the roof were damaged. Asbestos containing materials was being released from the building into the environment. The tribe indicated that they did not have the resources to cleanup the asbestos and would be unable to obtain funding to build a new structure until the asbestos was removed.
