Additional Property Attributes

The City of Bellfontaine is planning to demolish the Railroad YMCA building due to it's poor condition.

Former Use: The property is located in a primarily mixed land use area that includes commercial and residential properties. The property is bounded by: a residential property to the north; a City of Bellefontaine maintenance garage to the east; West Columbus Avenue and then Glass Express, County Glass Shops Inc., to the south, and Elm Street then a residence to the west. The property is currently vacant and owned by the City of Bellefontaine. The building was constructed in 1923 and was used as sleeping quarters for railroad personnel when trains made regular stops in Bellefontaine. It was also used as a Young Men�s Christian Association (YMCA). Community Development Planners obtained a grant to conduct an asbestos abatement and remodel the building. Plans for the redevelopment were completed in 1983 and included meeting rooms,dining rooms, a rental office space, and low income housing units located on the second and third floors. The development plan was not completed and the building was abandoned in its unfinished state of remodeling. The building was subsequently remodeled for use as a restaurant in 1985 and was closed in 1986. The building has been vacant since 1986. The building has been subject to substantial vandalism and is in a state of disrepair and degradation.
