InertFinder is an online database for searching substances used as inert ingredients in pesticide products. InertFinder is searchable by chemical name or CAS Registry Number, and provides information on the approval status of substances used as inert ingredients for use in food use, nonfood use and fragrance use pesticide products. What is InertFinder?
InertFinder is a database that allows pesticide formulators and other interested parties to easily identify chemicals approved for use as inert ingredients in pesticide products. It will allow registrants developing new products or new product formulations to readily determine which inert ingredients may be acceptable for use and make the same information more readily available to the public.
Search Example
As an example, search ‘Acetone’ in the Inert Ingredient Name field. After clicking the search button, you will see multiple results. Since ‘Acetone’ is a synonym for multiple ingredients there are several results to choose from. Click on the record with ‘Acetone’ as the Ingredient name and ‘67-64-1’ as the CAS Registration Number. The Inert Details screen displays information specific to ‘Acetone’, such as CAS Registration Number, Approval Status (Food, Non-food and/or Fragrance Use), Food Use tolerance information (40 CFR Part 180 information and external links) and Data Submitter information.
What is an inert ingredient?
Pesticide products contain both "active" and "inert" ingredients. The terms "active ingredient" and "inert ingredient" are defined by the federal law that governs pesticides (Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act [FIFRA]). An active ingredient is one that prevents, destroys, repels, or mitigates a pest, or is a plant regulator, defoliant, desiccant or nitrogen stabilizer. By law, the active ingredient must be identified by name on the pesticide product's label together with its percentage by weight.
All other ingredients in a pesticide product are called "inert ingredients."
An inert ingredient means any substance (or group of similar substances) other than an active ingredient that is intentionally included in a pesticide product. Called “inerts” by the law, the name does not mean non-toxic.
Pesticide products often contain more than one inert ingredient. Inert ingredients play key roles in the effectiveness of pesticides. Examples include inerts that prevent caking or foaming, extend product shelf-life, or solvents that allow herbicides to penetrate plants.
More information on inert ingredients
Substances are identified by inert ingredient name and/or CAS Reg No.

Entering a name in this field and clicking on "search" will search for all records that contain that name or that fragment of a name. (SUGGESTION: InertFinder currently does not provide for the ability to search names by synonyms so users may find that searches using the CAS Reg. No. field are more effective.)

Entering a Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) Registry Number in this field and clicking on "search" will search for all records containing that CAS Reg. No. CAS Reg. Nos. must be entered in the hyphenated ‘xxxxx-xx-x’ format.
